Since I teach writing courses, there’s no real final exam to give at the end of the semester. Instead, I have the students answer some questions that are designed to get them to reflect on the role writing plays in their lives and to reflect on the semester as a whole.

One of the questions I ask is “If you could start this semester over, what (if anything) would you do differently?”

I’ve started reading one class’ responses, and, I kid you not, 2 people (who don’t sit near each other) wrote that they would take vitamins.

Really? Vitamins? Is that some hipster code for cocaine that I’m not aware of?

I’ve had a request for the Top 5 books I didn’t like in 2009. Yes I think a list like this can be taken out of context. It may be a little silly. There may also be some interest there as well. So I don’t mind letting my followers know which books didn’t float my boat this year. I’m sure number five will be a surprise.

So the list……

4. The Reader by Bernhard Schlink

Not for me. I just couldn’t get into this story. I found it unbelievable. If the roles were reversed and a man slept with an under age girl would this book have even made it to print. I just couldn’t get that out of my head when I read this and was unable to pull or care about either character in this book.

The Reader is not a good book. It’s a bad book. Poorly written. I played the find a representative sentence, read it aloud, and laugh until tears at poor writing game several times with that one.

(If the novel was about a man sleeping with an underage girl and it was written this poorly, nobody would’ve bothered to read it. Fortunately, the guy who did write that novel wrote the ever loving -insert favorite curse word- out of it.)

Grade these 16 essays that are sitting 3 inches away from computer.
Go to a meeting (that starts @ 3:30 but doesn’t have an end time…) about teaching in a computer equipped classroom. (Someday, when I don’t work here anymore, I’ll explain why I’m all inner turmoily/outwardly violent about this entire situation. Chapter 1 of that explanation will be titled: “I’d be happy teach in your damn computer lab if it made any pedagogical sense.” Chapter 2’ll be something along the lines of: “If one more person tells me ‘in the future we plan to consider addressing the issues you raise,’ I’m going to set fire to whatever department makes this school the most money.”)
Run into anyone from my committee ever again.
